Dr. Jennifer Becker
Jennifer A. H. Becker (PhD Oklahoma, 2005) is an Assistant Professor and the Supervisor of the Interpersonal Communication program in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Alabama. In addition to teaching COM 561 Human Communication Theory and COM 499 Capstone Seminar, Dr. Becker teaches a variety of interpersonal and relational communication courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels (e.g., COM 219, COM 220, COM 330, COM 463, COM 563). Her teaching is, in part, informed by her research on problematic interpersonal communication in relational and organizational contexts. Her scholarship has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Communication Monographs, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Communication Studies, and Communication Quarterly.
Dr. Becker's most recent research applies an interpersonal perspective to communication pedagogy with attention to experiential learning, honors education, student engagement, and online teaching and learning. In November 2021, her work was selected as a top paper by the Experiential Learning in Communication Division of the National Communication Association at the annual convention in Seattle. In 2020, Dr. Becker and Dr. Caroline Parsons published an edited volume titled Honors Communication: Contextual Issues and Lessons Learned in Teaching, Advising, and Mentoring the Undergraduate Honors Student in Communication (https://doi.org/10.3726/b16292). She has also been honored as a 2019 Research Faculty Fellow, 2019 Outstanding Advisor, 2018 Innovation Mentor, and 2017 Innovation Spirit Scholar for excellence in research on pedagogy, advising, and teaching. Dr. Becker originally hails from southeastern Minnesota. In her free time, she enjoys exploring and contributing to the local community with her husband and three school-aged children. |
